PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an organophosphorus compound useful for a flame-retardant resin composition having improved impact resistance in thin-walled moldings. SOLUTION: The method for producing an organophosphorus compound comprises a first reaction process for carrying out a condensation reaction between a phosphorus oxyhalide and 2,2-bis(4'-hydroxyphenyl)propane in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, a second hydroxy process for carrying out a condensation reaction between the reaction product of the first reaction process and xylenol, a third reaction process for carrying out a condensation reaction between the reaction product of the second reaction process and phenol and a purification process for removing or deactivating the catalyst. The feed composition of raw materials is 10<SP>-3</SP>to 2×10<SP>-1</SP>mol of the Lewis acid catalyst, 1.5 to 10 mol of the phosphorus oxyhalide and 1 to 3 mols of xylenol.
