COMBINATORIAL POLARIZATION SCRAMBLERS FOR MANY SEGMENT PMD EMULATOR

A PMD emulator includes at least two polarization phase plates. The rotation matrices of the at least two phase plates are varied to reduce the required number of phase-plates without reducing the number of birefringent segments used. The emulator comprises loops of polarisation-maintaining fibre which pass through different combinations of polarisation scrumblers, the latter being fibre squeezers in the preferred embodiment.
