The linear spindle drive (20) to apply a strong force to a machine component (1), e.g. a casting unit or closing unit or tool clamp, acting on a moving platen (8) has a threaded drive (22) with a threaded spindle (30) for the axial force, parallel to the spindle drive. During a partial stroke movement (A), the threaded drive is not engaged and is then brought into action to take up the axial force. The spindle and threaded spindle drives have dedicated motors (26,34).
