PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display driving device and a display driving method for a display medium having a memory property by which electrostatic charges in particles of the display medium are accurately detected to select a voltage necessary for rewriting and changes in the display density are prevented. SOLUTION: An image display apparatus 10 is composed of: a display medium 12; a controlling means 14; a driving power supply 16; an updating means 18; a potential measuring means 20; a detection switch 22; a column electrode driving circuit 24; a row electrode driving circuit 26; switching elements 28, 30; and a noise reducing means 32. When the detection switch 22 connecting the display medium 12 and the driving power supply 16 is turned off after a predetermined period of driving the driving power supply 16 has passed, the controlling means 14 instructs the updating means 18 to update a predetermined parameter relating to the voltage in electrodes according to a residual potential between electrodes in the display medium 12.
