PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator door safety device for detecting persons and articles approaching an elevator door with a detection region held almost constant to achieve reliable safe operation. SOLUTION: A pair of double opening type door panels 1a, 1b are provided in the doorway of an elevator car. On one of a pair of sides of the pair of door panels 1a, 1b to be joined to each other when closed, a projector 3 is arranged along the vertical direction with a plurality of light emitting elements each directed to the side of an elevator hall and having a predetermined angle to the other-side door panel surface. On the other side, a photoreceiver 4 is arranged along the vertical direction with a plurality of light receiving elements 7 each directed to the side of the elevator hall and having a predetermined angle to the other-side door panel surface.
