The present invention provides a method for detecting one or more analytes selected from oxygen, carbon dioxide and an anaesthetic agent in a sample, wherein the sample is passed through a porous, oleophobic membrane into an electrochemical cell, wherein the cell comprises working and counter electrodes and an electrolyte solution, wherein the electrolyte solution comprises a non-aqueous, aprotic solvent and, dissolved therein, an electrolyte, and wherein the solvent is soluble to the one or more analytes and is not dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Apparatus suitable for use in such a method is also provided.
