545,312. Magnesium, INTERNATIONAL ALLOYS, Ltd., and PRYTHERCH, W. E. April 29, 1941, No. 5536. [Class 82 (i)] Magnesium is obtained by passing a series of self-contained crucible and condenser units through a tunnel furnace maintained under reduced pressure, each crucible containing a mixture of magnesiferous material and a metallic reducing agent. The mixture may be briquetted with a binder such as molasses or linseed oil and may be preheated before the crucibles are passed into the tunnel furnace. In the apparatus shown, each crucible and condenser unit comprises a lidded crucible 1 subdivided by perforated heat-conducting partitions 10 and communicating with a condenser 2 into which the vapour passes through a tube 13. The condensed metal is collected in the lower part of the condenser, and impurities are collected in a tray 17 suspended in a flared member 16. |
