The procedure entails creating a slip condition on the friction clutch, reducing the engine torque while maintaining the sli condition, and taking out the gear step with the drive train free of load. The slip condition is maintained for predetermined interval of especially 0-1 seconds. The slip condition is established by an evaluation of the clutch travel, or by an evaluation the RPM difference between the engine and gearbox input shaft.
