<p>A defibered pulp is bleached using a peroxide in alkaline conditions obtained by adding alkali metal aluminate to the pulp (14) to be bleached; washing the bleached pulp (15); and recovering chemicals from spent liquor by concentrating and combusting the spent liquor and dissolving the ash into water. At least a part of the added alkali metal aluminate (12) is the ash (28) dissolved in water.</p>
