A character input method using a soft key board in a mobile terminal is provided to design more convenient soft key board by solving problems of a soft key board provided in a pocket PC. When contact of an input unit with a soft key board region, the physical region where the input unit is positioned is converted into a region recognized by an OS, and it is checked whether the input unit is dragged to a different position in a state of being contacted with the soft key board(303,305,307). When the dragging is sensed, a physical region of the position to which the input unit has been newly moved into a region recognized by the OS(317,305). When the input unit is separated from the soft key board, a character corresponding to a virtual key value of the key board identical to a region of the position from which the input unit is separated is outputted to a display unit(311,313).
