An optical disk reproducing device having a PR(Partial Response) target select function and a PR target selecting method using the reproducing device are provided to select a PR target having the best data detection performance by evaluating data detection performance of each PR target, and to restore data read from an optical disk to original data by using the selected PR target, thereby reducing an error rate during data reproduction. An equalizer(130) equalizes digital signals read from an optical disk(100a) according to frequency characteristics of particular PR targets. A viterbi decoder(140) sequentially applies the plural PR targets, and viterbi-decodes data equalized in the equalizer(130). A data detection performance evaluator(160) measures quality of the decoded data, and evaluates data detection performance of the respective PR targets. A controller(170) selects a PR target suited to the digital signals based on the evaluation signal for the data detection performance, and provides information on the selected PR target to the decoder(140) so that data is detected by using the selected PR target when the data read from the disk(100a) is reproduced.
