A lipid compound comprising a polar moiety and at least one non-polar moiety, wherein each, or at least one, non-polar moiety is of the formula: X-Y-Z wherein X is a hydrocarbyl chain, Y is at least one species selected from the list consisting of S, Se, SO2, SO, and O, and Z is either not present or a hydrocarbyl group, wherein the polar moiety is of the formula: -[C(O)]mPHG wherein PHG is a polar head group, and wherein m is the number of non-polar moieties; wherein the polar head group is derived from a species selected from the list consisting of phospholipids, ceramides, triacylglycerols, lysophospholipids, phosphatidylserines, glycerols, alcohols, alkoxy compounds, monoacyiglycerols, gangliosides, sphingomyelins, cerebrosides, phosphatidylcholines, phosphatidylethanolamines, phosphatidylinositols (PI), diacylglycerols, phosphatidic acids, glycerocarbohydrates, polyalcohols and phosphatidylglycerols; and including the following provisos: (a) if PHG is ethanolamine, and if Y is S, then Y is not in the position 9, 10, 11 or 12, with respect to the carbon of the nearest C=O entity in the PHG entity, (b) if PHG is derived from diacyiglycerol, then Y is not O, (c) if PHG is derived from a phospholipid, and if Y is O, then Y is not in the position 12, with respect to the carbon of the nearest C=O entity in the PHG entity, (d) if said compound contains only one non-polar moiety and m is 1, then PHG is not a C1-C4 alkoxy group.
