A mobile terminal having an FM transmitter for transmitting an audio signal to an external sound device and its method are provided to wirelessly transmit an audio signal to an external sound device such as a car audio having FM tuner, a home audio, and FM radio and to provide a specified A/V system overcoming the limitation of a small speaker of a mobile terminal. An audio source unit(101) decodes an audio signal according to each source and outputs a digital audio signal. An audio processing unit(102) converts the outputted digital audio signal into an analog audio signal, and switches the analog audio signal according to a selected audio signal output unit. An FM transmitter(103) receives a selected frequency for modulating the analog audio signal into an FM frequency, and modulates the analog audio signal with the selected frequency. A transmitter/receiver(104) wirelessly transmits the FM-modulated audio signal. A controller(105) controls the audio source unit(101) to select the audio source, controls an output format of the analog audio signal inputted to the audio processing unit(104), and also controls selecting of the frequency for modulating the analog audio signal.
