The device has a housing, and a suppressor e.g. lightning current and/or over voltage suppressor, that is arranged in the housing. A high power semiconductor device (1) is provided as suppressor. The semiconductor device is controllable by a control circuit (2) in such a manner that characteristic such as resistance, of the semiconductor device has different properties in different operating ranges of the surge protection device. An independent claim is also included for a method for discharging transient over voltages in electrical low voltage equipments.
