The present invention relates to methods for the activation of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) activity and/or cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG) activity in organs and portions thereof suitable for transplantation as a means for preservation/maintenance of the organs and portions thereof prior to transplant into the recipient. The present invention also relates to compositions comprising an activator of PKA and/or PKG kinase activity for use in the methods of the invention.
