PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that failure of a plurality of shades and a switching device is not noticed until abnormality of a luminous intensity distribution pattern is noticed in a conventional headlamp for a vehicle. SOLUTION: The headlamp for the vehicle is provided with a photosensor 24 for detecting a light LT; shielding parts 25, 26 interlocked with switching of attitude of the plurality of shades 5, 6 and shielding the light LT incident to the photosensor 24; passing parts 27, 28 provided on the shielding parts 25, 26 and passing the light LT to the photosensor 24 at attitude of the plurality of shades 5, 6 obtained with the luminous intensity distribution pattern MP for a highway; and a failure detection part 30 for driving the switching device to switch the plurality of shades 5, 6 to respective attitudes obtained with respective luminous intensity distribution pattern LP, MP, HP and detecting the failure of the plurality of shades 5, 6 and the switching device based on a signal ouputted from the photosensor 24 at the respective attitudes of the plurality of shades 5, 6.
