PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a strut type shock absorber equipped with a structure which easily carries out work for disposing and fixing a knuckle member between clipping pieces of a knuckle bracket in a short time. SOLUTION: In the strut type shock absorber, a damper 5 in an inverted state having an attaching portion coupled to a vehicle body side is inserted in an outer tube 3 attached with the knuckle bracket 1 coupled to a knuckle arm 30 on an axle side so as to freely appear and disappear. A distal end of a piston rod 6 inserted in the damper 5 so as to freely appear and disappear is coupled to a lower portion 7 of the outer tube 3, and the knuckle bracket 1 is structured from a pair of the clipping pieces 17 clipping the knuckle arm 30. The clipping pieces 17 are provided with attaching holes 21a, 21b for attaching the knuckle arm 30. A coupling member 14 coupling these clipping pieces 17 is provided between the pair of the clipping pieces 17. A positioning portion 18 positioning the knuckle arm 30 to the clipping pieces 17 when the knuckle arm 30 is disposed between the clipping pieces 17 is provided on the coupling member 14.
