<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator for a lithium ion secondary battery which hardly generates short-circuit, is excellent in strength, and by which the lithium ion secondary battery suitable for high-rate discharge, and having low internal resistance, is manufactured easily, and also to provide the lithium ion secondary battery. <P>SOLUTION: The separator for the lithium ion secondary battery is composed of nonwoven fabric having: a fine fiber layer composed of very fine fiber and/or pulp-shaped fiber having diameter of 10 μm or less as main component; and a fiber reinforcing layer reinforcing the fine fiber layer. The nonwoven fabric has a thickness of 50 μm or less and a tensile strength of 40N/50 mm width or higher.
