An optical recording medium comprising a cover layer is desirable, especially for near field optical recording, but the high numerical aperture advantages of the system can be compromised by traditional cover layer materials, as the refractive index of these materials is too low. Significantly higher refractive index materials containing nanoscale particles can be used to solve this issue but a focused read/write spot can be deteriorated significantly due to scattering of light by the nanoscale particles. Use of a smoothing filter layer restores spot quality. |
