PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus with excellent usability wherein a damage caused to an original due to wrong operations of a user and trouble of a restoring job due to jammed originals are avoided by allowing the image reading apparatus to decide the specification of the original and to automatically select an optimum paper discharge port. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus automatically selects two paper discharge ports in response to the length of an image calculated by detecting a tip and a tail end of the original and the thickness of the original detected by a detection means, the image reading apparatus including: an original read means for reading the image; a means for feeding and carrying the original; the detection means for detecting the thickness of the original; a detection means for detecting the tip and the tail end of the original; a paper discharge means for forming a U turn-path at a downstream side of the original read means and discharging the original to a front side; a discharge means for discharging the original at a rear side through a straight path at the downstream of the original read means; and a selection means selecting to which of the two discharge means the original is to be discharged.
