<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently perform the processing of depositing proper amounts of toner between a photoreceptor and an intermediate transfer member and corresponding cleaning means abutting on them. <P>SOLUTION: A toner deposition patch image Idp 10 is formed on the surface of the photoreceptor 22, the toner deposition patch image having a partial image Idp11 to be transferred to the intermediate transfer belt and a partial image Idp12 to be left on the photoreceptor. When the partial image Idp2 is formed first, both the partial images are formed so that a space greater than the circumferential length Lpc or more of the photoreceptor 22 is left between the partial images. Forming the partial image Idp11 while avoiding the surface of the photoreceptor from which the patch image has been just removed makes it possible to restrain variations in an amount of toner, resulting from disturbance of the potential of the surface.
