PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for cleaning that can prolong lives of image carriers and a foreign matter removing member and maintain image quality, and to provide an image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: The method for cleaning is equipped with the image carriers 21 and 31, the foreign matter removing member 51 which removes foreign matter on image carrier surfaces in contact with the image carriers 21 and 31, an opposite member 33 which comes into contact with the image carriers 21 and 31, and a vibration imparting means 70 of imparting vibrations to the opposite member. Vibrations are imparted to the opposite member 33 to vibrate the image carriers 21 and 31 brought into contact with the opposite member 33, and the foreign matter sticking on the image carrier surfaces is scraped off by the foreign matter removing member 51.
