PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a more excellent Mg<SB>2</SB>Ni alloy as a hydrogen storage body, to provide a method for producing the same, and to provide Mg<SB>2</SB>Ni in which the contents of unreacted Mg and MgNi<SB>2</SB>as by-products from the production of Mg<SB>2</SB>Ni are low. SOLUTION: The production method comprises: an Mg<SB>2</SB>Ni production stage where Mg<SB>2</SB>Ni is produced from a raw material (precursor) comprising Mg and Ni by IFACS (Induction Field Activated Combustion Synthesis) utilizing induction heating; a first heating stage where the temperature of the precursor is made higher than the peritectic point of MgNi<SB>2</SB>; a cooling stage where the temperature of the precursor is made equal to or lower than the peritectic point of MgNi<SB>2</SB>after the first heating stage; and a second heating stage where the temperature of the precursor is made higher than the peritectic point of MgNi<SB>2</SB>after the cooling stage.
