Provided is a recording/reproducing system which can perform switching operation of operation mode corresponding to a plurality of recording formats at a high speed. The recording/reproducing system is composed of a recording/reproducing device wherein a first recording format and a second recording format are provided and first operation mode and second operation mode corresponding to each of the recording formats can be switched; and a personal computer connected to the recording/reproducing device for transferring recording data to the recording/reproducing device. The recording/reproducing system is characterized in that a multipurpose driver loaded in an operating system of the personal computer is used as a device driver of the recording/reproducing device, in both cases in the first operation mode and the second operation mode.
