The invention comprises a compound having the following formula wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an alkanoyl group having not more than 8 carbon atoms and the ripple mark (#x) represents a generic indication of both the a - and b -positions, and the preparation thereof by the process of the examples, viz. by subjecting a 17a -methyl-D-homoandrost - 9(11) - ene - 16b ,17b - diol or 17b - methyl - D - homo - androst - 9(11) - ene-16a ,17a - diol derivative to oxidative ring fission, e.g. with periodic acid in an inert solvent.
