The device has a collecting unit for collecting objects (4, 5) raised above a roadway in the surrounding of a vehicle, and an identification unit for identifying structural boundary of a roadway and/or traffic lane. An outputting unit outputs warning during impending deviation and/or going out of the lane. An evaluating unit evaluates a present surrounding situation by comparing location of the identified boundary with detected roadway edge markings (8, 10) and/or traffic lane markings (6, 7) or roadway edges (3, 9). An adjusting unit adjusts the output of the warning based on the situation. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a vehicle assistance device.
