PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus having such a configuration that the deterioration over time of a photoreceptor due to a pre-transfer exposure performed for improving the separability of a transfer material can be prevented. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided: with a pre-transfer exposure means 20 which can expose only a position corresponding to the leading edge part of a transfer material S on the above-mentioned latent image carrier 2, before transfer to the transfer material S and comprises a plurality of series circuits including an arbitrary light emitting element; and a transfer bias means 6D used for transferring a visible image to the transfer material S. The use of the pre-transfer exposure means 20 and the bias applying timing of the transfer bias means 6D are combined, The transfer bias means 6D starts to apply a bias at least after a prescribed time from when the leading edge of the transfer material starts to come into contact with the latent image carrier. The pre-transfer exposure means 20 is selectively lighted according to the width of the transfer material in the area of a transfer agent width with respect to the latent image carrier 2.
