PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal aligning agent for manufacturing a liquid crystal alignment layer of a vertical liquid crystal display element, which prevents electrostatic failure in a manufacturing step by improving a voltage leaking property and a voltage holding ratio. SOLUTION: The vertical liquid crystal aligning agent is composed of a polyamic acid and an imide polymer, and contains≥40 wt.% and <90 wt.% polyamic acid of which at least 50 mol% of diamine components originates from p-phenylenediamines, and further of which at least 50 mol% of tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride components originates from cyclobutanetetracarboxylic acid dianhydrides, cyclopentanetetracarboxylic acid dianhydrides, or hexahydro-5(tetrahydro-2,5-dioxo-3-furanyl)-naphtho[1,2-c]-furan-1,3-diones.
