<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently perform the processing of depositing proper amounts of toner between a photoreceptor and an intermediate transfer member and corresponding cleaning means abutting on them. <P>SOLUTION: A toner deposition patch image Idp 10 is formed on the surface of the photoreceptor 22, the toner deposition patch image having a partial image Idp1 to be transferred to the intermediate transfer belt and a partial image Idp2 to be left on the photoreceptor. The length Ldp1 of the partial image Idp1 and the length Ldp2 of the partial image Idp2 are determined based on the use history (e.g., an amount of rotation, and the number of sheets subjected to image formation) of the photoreceptor 22 and intermediate transfer belt.
