PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely measure the number of codes in a treat, regardless of code type and even in the case of small bump on the surface of the treat and miniaturize the size of the measuring device. SOLUTION: A projector 16 and a sensor 17 are unified via a flexible arm 15, and the projector 16 illuminates the surface 52 of the treat 50 from the oblique direction, making shadow in the concave grooves 54 between codes 51 by illuminating the convex column 53 corresponding to the codes 51 on the surface 52. A CCD camera 17a of the sensor 17 captures the data relating to the light and shade, and a calculating means of a control device 3 analyzes and measures the number of the codes. The position and illuminating angle of the projector 16 are optimized by the flexible arm 15, and the light and shade are formed, even in the case of small bump of the surface 52.
