PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To flexibly comply with a variety of demands from a brightness preference demand to a color-reproducibility preference demand. SOLUTION: The projection display apparatus (10) has: a light source (30) for emitting a white spotlight; a color wheel (31) on which a plurality of filters with different spectral characteristics including complementary colors of respective complementary colors of three primary colors of light in addition to primary color areas of the three primary colors of light are arranged in the circumferential direction; a modulation unit (34) which modulates an image in a mixed-color period in which, along with the rotation of the color wheel, spotlight (PA) transmitted through the color wheel in synchronism with the rotation of the color wheel or spotlight before transmission passes through the boundary between a first filter and a second filter adjoining to each other and having different spectral characteristics when the spotlight moves from the first filter to the second filter; and an image modulation timing adjusting unit (22) which adjusts the timing at which a user modulates the image.
