PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new side-chain type liquid crystal polymer and side-chain type liquid crystal elastomer having wide liquid crystal temperature range, and a mesogen (a compound having a mesogenic group) having a vinyl group used for production thereof. SOLUTION: The mesogen is represented by the general formula (wherein R<SP>1</SP>is a 1-20C alkylene group or a group obtained by partially modifying the alkylene group and Ar is an aryl group which may have a substituent) and satisfies at least either one of the following items: (1) chain length of R<SP>1</SP>is≥3 and (2) Ar contains two or more aromatic rings. The liquid crystal polymer is obtained by hydrosilylation reaction between the mesogen and a polysiloxane having Si-H bond. The liquid crystal elastomer is obtained by hydrosilylation reaction among the mesogen, a crosslinking agent which is a compound having two or more vinyl groups and a polysiloxane having Si-H bond.
