PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which degradation of an image is suppressed by suppressing the gap in timing for starting writing on a photosensitive body with laser light. SOLUTION: A rotary polyhedral mirror is irradiated with laser beams from different directions, respectively, and the laser beams are reflected to different directions of optical axis. Main scanning is performed with a laser beam at a predetermined deflection angle. First and second beam detectors are arranged at the incident ends of first and second optical scanning sections in the scanning direction, and start of scanning with light beam by the second beam detector is detected prior to start of scanning by the first beam detector. Sampling start timing of first and second image data is set commonly by utilizing the detection results of the first beam detector. First and second image data are written in a memory based on the detection results of the first and second beam detectors and then first and second laser light sources are controlled based on the image data read out from the memory.
