PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting a gene by which the gene to be detected and having a specific sequence can be detected in high sensitivity. SOLUTION: The method for detecting the gene comprises a labeling agent-adding step for adding the labeling agent electrically active to a gene sample obtained by denaturing the gene to be detected to a single stranded form, specifically bound to the gene sample, and covalently bound thereto by light irradiation, a light-irradiating step for irradiating the resultant mixture with the light to covalently bind the gene sample with the added labeling agent, a double stranded nucleic acid-forming step for adding the gene sample covalently bound to the labeling agent to an electrode to which a single-stranded nucleic acid probe having a base sequence complementary to the gene sequence to be detected is immobilized to form the double stranded nucleic acid obtained by hybridizing the nucleic acid probe immobilized on the electrode with the gene sample, and a detection step for detecting the labeling agent covalently bound to the double-stranded nucleic acid by an electrochemical measurement.
