<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more quickly execute proper grayscale compression of luminance or color value, based on each image. <P>SOLUTION: A tone curve calculation part 163 calculates a tone curve on the basis of a luminance distribution of an input image and calculates a γ_comp parameter based on an inclination of the tone curve. A general luminance calculation part 166 calculates a general luminance value of a general luminance image comprising a low frequency component of the input image. A grayscale conversion part 167 uses the tone curve to compress grayscales of input luminance and general luminance. A contrast correction part 168 corrects contrast of the grayscale-compressed input image on the basis of the γ_comp parameter and grayscale-compressed general luminance.
