<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust emission control system of an internal combustion engine with a technique for more quick removal of particulate matter collected in a particulate filter while inhibiting deterioration of fuel consumption. <P>SOLUTION: The exhaust emission control system comprises a fuel addition means 5 for adding fuel into exhaust gas, a heat generation means 3 for generating heat when fuel is added by the fuel addition means 5, the particulate filter 4 for temporarily collecting the particulate matter in the exhaust gas, temperature of which is raised by the heat generated by the heat generation means 3, a temperature oscillation means 6 for oscillating the temperature of the heat generation means 3 by varying a fuel quantity added by the fuel addition means 5 when the particulate matter collected in the particulate filter 4 is removed.
