PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor optical device that prevents heat generation by reducing the resistance of a pass current in current constriction, and can also control a transverse mode. SOLUTION: In the semiconductor optical device apparatus, an n-type region, an active layer, and a compound semiconductor layer, which contains a convex section whose width is smaller than that of a substrate, are formed on the substrate.
