A steam turbine 166 comprises a final turbine stage and a diffuser arranged downstream thereof, the diffuser having a diverging wall, extending from a diffuser inlet to a diffuser outlet, and a centre-body arranged therein. At least one opening 162, 164 is provided in each of diffuser wall and the centre-body downstream of the diffuser inlet, and each being operable to prevent or delay separation of a boundary layer from the diffuser wall and centre-body. Fluid may be injected into, or drawn out from, the openings 162, 164. Other arrangements intended to prevent or delay boundary layer separation from the diffuser wall are also disclosed. |
