Fresh groundwater (3) flowing underground from an area of land to a location beneath the sea (10) is collected by creating an artificial closed lagoon (2) along the coast using a dyke (1) or similar water barrier. The water level in the lagoon is kept higher (d) than the seawater level. This method can be employed along both rocky and sandy coastlines.
