A channel equalizer, a channel equalization method, and a tap coefficient updating method are provided to operate irrespectively of a phase error by using the amplitude level of a received signal in channel equalization, so that system designs can be available for the channel equalizer regardless of a sequence of carrier recovery and the channel equalization. A channel equalizer comprises the followings: a feedforward filter(110) which filters a received signal; a level determination unit(130) which determines the first level value among plural predetermined amplitude levels based on the amplitude of a signal outputted from the feedforward filter(110); and an error calculation unit(140) which calculates the first error value based on the amplitude of the signal outputted from the feedforward filter(110) and the first level value and outputs the first error value to the feedforward filter(110) so that the feedforward filter(110) updates a tap coefficient by using the first error value.
