PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize a discharge rate of a battery by decreasing a cranking rotational speed required for initiating combustion as much as possible in such an engine that an inlet valve closure position is particularly retarded to the vicinity of a top dead center of compression when restarting the engine. SOLUTION: In an engine starting method which is employed to start the engine by cranking a crankshaft (1a) of the engine (1) by a motor (2), an integrated controller (31) comprises a procedure to perform fuel supply and ignition during the cranking, a procedure to judge whether fire has been caught by the fuel supply and ignition, and a procedure to control the motor rotational speed or the power supplied to the motor during the cranking based on a result of the judgement of catching fire.
