PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new azo compound useful as a dye having good hue and high heat fastness and light fastness. SOLUTION: The new azo compound useful as an azo dye is a pyrimidine azo compound represented by general formula (I) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>represents a heterocyclic group; R<SP>2</SP>represents a hydrogen atom or a substituent; R<SP>3</SP>. R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>, R<SP>6</SP>, R<SP>7</SP>and R<SP>8</SP>represent each independently a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group or the like; and R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>and R<SP>6</SP>or R<SP>7</SP>and R<SP>8</SP>may mutually be bound to form a 5-, a 6- or a 7-membered ring) and a tautomer thereof.
