A separator and a fuel cell in which uniformity of reaction gas speed can be improved and flooding due to excessive condensed water in a channel groove can be suppressed appropriately. The reaction gas circulating region (101) of the separator (2) has a branch region (21) having a channel groove group for branching reaction gas, one or more joining regions (22) each having a recess for mixing the reaction gas and connecting a plurality of branch regions such that the channel groove group of the adjoining branch regions (21) communicates with the recess, and a protrusion (27) standing from the bottom face of the recess and arranged insularly. A pair of channel groove groups communicating with the recess in the joining region (22) are formed such that the number of grooves in the upstream side channel groove group is larger than that in the downstream side channel groove group. The recess in the joining region (22) is formed at the turnup portion of the serpentine reaction gas circulating region (101) while being sectioned by an oblique boundary between the pair of channel groove groups communicating with the recess and the outer end of the turnup portion.
