The carburetor has an intake duct section (1) and a control chamber, which is separated from a compensation chamber by a control diaphragm (10). An operating device with electromagnets (27) is provided on the side of the control diaphragm, where the side is turned away from the compensation chamber. The device deflects the diaphragm in the direction of the compensation chamber, while a valve (11) arranged in a fuel pipe is closed. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a diaphragm carburetor.
