[PROBLEMS] To provide a process for production of a high-quality chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g., cumylchloride), which can be used as a cation polymerization initiator, in a simpler manner. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] A chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon can be produced by repeating both the chlorination step in which an organic solvent containing a compound represented by the formula: Ar(R<SUP>1</SUP>C=CH<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>n</SUB> and an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution having a hydrochloric acid concentration of 30% by weight or higher while stirring and the step of removing a part or all of the aqueous phase from the reaction solution produced in the chlorination step and then adding an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution having a hydrochloric acid concentration of 30% by weight to the reaction solution, until chlorination reaction rate of the compound reaches a predetermined level.
