PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element in which blue light emission having high luminance and luminous efficiency is obtained and a new nitrogen-containing heterocyclic derivative capable of providing the element. SOLUTION: The present invention provides the nitrogen-containing heterocyclic derivative having a specific structure and the organic electroluminescent element in which an organic thin film layer composed of one layer or a plurality of layers containing at least luminous layer is sandwiched between a cathode and an anode. In the organic electroluminescent element, at least one layer of the organic thin film layer contains the nitrogen-containing heterocyclic derivative alone or as a component of the mixture.
