PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting system for a railway vehicle capable of suppressing the erroneous operation of the turn-on or turn-off of a lighting member. SOLUTION: In the lighting system 13 for the railway vehicle, a step light 18 is lighted by a switching part 36 in synchronization with the case that an operation base selection switch 10 is brought into an intermediate position to attract the attention of a passenger or the like to a fact that a step 14 exists in a go-through passage 9. Further, the switching part 36 turns off the step light 18 in synchronization with the case that the operation base selection switch 10 is brought into a front position or a rear position and avoids a failure of a visual field by reflective projection. Thus, the erroneous operation of turn-on or turn-off can be prevented by controlling the switching of the turn-on or turn-off of the step light 18 interlocked with a build-up form of a railway vehicle 1A having an engineer's cab 2A and both of the safety of the case that the go-through passage 9 of the engineer's cab 2A is used by the passenger or the like and safety in the operation of the case that the engineer's cab 2A is used as an operator's cabin or a conductor's cabin can be ensured.
