A method and an apparatus for driving a light emitting display(LED) device are provided to facilitating a color detection process by detecting white light at a frame controller. An apparatus for driving a light emitting display device includes a frame controller(70), a display device driver(60), an optical sensor(100), and an LED driver(110). The frame controller receives red(R), green(G), and blue(B) signals and entirely whitens one of successive frames constituting one video signal. The display device driver receives the RGB signals from the frame controller and drives the light emitting display device. The optical sensor detects the LED characteristic at the whitening timing. The LED driver receives the RGB signals from the display device driver, compares the RGB signals with the LED characteristic at the whitening timing, and detects color characteristic of the LED.
