<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high glossy, high quality fixed product by improving the ability to remove a recording material remaining within an image forming apparatus and the ability to peel off a recording material. <P>SOLUTION: The fixing device includes: a fixing roller 51; a rotatory roller 53 with a predetermined space from the fixing roller 51; a fixing belt 56 rotated by being wound around the fixing roller 51 and rotatory roller 53; a pressure roller 52 disposed opposite to and in firm contact with the fixing roller 51; and a cooling fan 55 disposed between the fixing roller 56 and rotatory roller 53 along the fixing belt 56. The fixing device is provided with an abnormal state detecting means, which has an optical sensor 96 and a control section for processing information based on input information and detects an abnormal conveying state of the fixing device 50. In case where the abnormal state detecting means detects an abnormal conveying state occurring downstream of the cooling fan 55, a recording material P present on the fixing belt 56 is conveyed to the position where the recording material P can be cooled by the cooling fan 55.
