PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a matrix converter apparatus for preventing semiconductor switching elements for constituting a bidirectional switch from overvoltage breakdown during a dielectric strength test. SOLUTION: A matrix converter apparatus comprises the bidirectional switch provided with phase input terminals connected to an AC power supply 1, phase output terminals for outputting an arbitrary DC/AC voltage, IGBT transistors 102, 103 connected reversely in series, and diodes 104, 105 connected reversely to the IGBT transistors in parallel; and a group 5 of the bidirectional switches for connecting the phase input terminals and the phase output terminal, PWM-controls the group of the bidirectional switches, converts the voltage of the AC power supply into the arbitrary DC/AC voltage, and outputs it from the phase output terminals. Resistors R1, R2 are provided between a series connection of the IGBT transistors constituting the bidirectional switch and the phase input terminals or the phase output terminals.
